Alaska to Argentina – Travels on a Fat Kitty

As most of you know Carolyn (hereafter known as the Beloved), Kitty (our hopefully trusty steed) and myself have started on our Alaska to Argentina trip. We have only been on the road for a few days after starting from Seattle (thank you Simon & Sumita) and then Vancouver (thank you Tom & Joanie) we are now in Prince George and have travelled only about 1000 km so far, but they have been through some magnificent motorcycling country.

Sunshine, snow capped mountains, windy roads, trees, my Best Girl by my side. I want to sing, sing "I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok..........."

I have to admit to being somewhat freaked out when I had the bike fully loaded at Simon’s house before we left, it was huge. While staying with Tom he made the excellent suggestion of putting it on a truck weigh bridge.

Tonight at Prince George we found a weigh bridge that was open.

We weighed in at FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY KILOGRAMS. (150kgs front axle, 350kgs rear axle weight)

Bugger me said the fairy princess. I nearly had to put on a clean pair of underwear.

For all the non metric people this is 1080 pounds. The factory maximum loaded weight is 420 kg. But I have a cunning plan as from tomorrow the Beloved is going on a diet that I have designed which consists of no food whatsoever and since we are sitting down all day I’ll let her run the last 5km into the town where we will be staying at. I know what your thinking how will she know where to go?

Don’t worry I”l make sure that I don’t go too fast and lose sight of her. Since we are in this together I will have to lose my share of the load as well so I’ve decided to sacrifice my underwear. This way not only will I have reduce my fair share of the excess weight but I will be able to claim to be the first (only?) person to have travelled across the Americas commando style, Brilliant!!! Why is there a pig flying around the ceiling of the motel room?

Did I mention the bike weighs FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY KILOGRAMS?

On a serious note we will have to lose some weight before we head down Mexico way and we will be shedding some camp gear as we head south so that will help, that and the underwear.

A later photo from California, our weight loss programme hasn't really kicked in yet.

I have to look at the bright side, Tom was telling me that a friend of his was on a trip and his bike/trailer combination weighed in at 2100 pounds. In metric land this is just short of a metric tonne. Definitely diet time. That’s all for now, We are putting together a longer email with more photos.

Bye for now

P.S Did I mention the bike weighs FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY KILOGRAMS?
